Но из чёрной мглы
Страха, ужаса и бед
Не хвалы,
А хулы
5 Шлет Земля ему в ответ:

«Ревностно сторожит
Зависть звёздная мой острог.
Вход закрыт
Но звучит,
10 Твой глас и в темнице, о древний Бог!

Себялюбивый Творец
Видно, злоба твоя горяча,
Если юнец
Находит конец
10 В пытках, в цепях, под рукой палача.

Разве не любо весне,
Когда покрыт цветами луг?
Но при луне
Стоят в стороне,
15 И вилы, и коса, и плуг.

В жилах застыла кровь,
И цепь мне шею обвила —
Когда ты вновь
Заковал Любовь
20 В колодки зависти и зла».

Does spring hide its joy
When buds and blossoms grow?
Does the sower?
Sow by night?
20 Or the plowman in darkness plow?

Break this heavy chain,
That does freeze my bones around
Selfish! vain!
Eternal bane!
25 That free Love with bondage bound.
