Editor's Introduction
Most of the following text of "Caraboo: A Narrative of a Singular Imposition" was written and published by John Matthew Gutch, (1776-1861), in 1817. His book contains extensive information on the impostor Mary Baker, (1791-1864), known as the "Princess Caraboo." As the original book is quite rare, and, as many subsequent reports on "Princess Caraboo"contain unreliable information, (for example, the recent movie "Princess Caraboo," which was labeled as a "true story" despite its abundant romantic fictions), I am making this hypertext edition available with a few additional notes; and, I wish to thank Mr. Bernard Spaughton for providing a photocopy of this book (from the Exeter Library). To avoid long downloads, with this lengthy book, its illustrations are available on a separate page and may be accessed by links in the text. The original pagination has been noted in brackets.
